J'organise donc une "petite" soirée au Club 69, à Gand, sur le thème SURVIVOR. Survivor, comme la chanson des Destiny's Child, mais aussi pour toutes ces années ultra intenses vécues jusqu'ici, et pour la musique de cette enfance des années 90 et début 2000, qui ne mourra décidément jamais.

Next Monday, the 25th, I will embrace the fateful age of 25. Let's skip the fact that I am totally freaking out and go straight to the fun part: because of course, I have to celebrate in style! That's why I am having a "little" party at Club 69, in Ghent, called SURVIVOR. Survivor like the Destiny's Child's song, but also for all those very intense years that I've lived already, and of course for the music of my childhood between the 90's and early 00's, that will live forever.

Il y a un endroit à Gand où, depuis mes premiers pas dans la ville, je me réfugie régulièrement. Un lendemain de veille, un dimanche après-midi, dès que je m'ennuie ou que j'ai besoin d'inspiration, je fonce au SMAK, incroyable musée d'art contemporain situé à deux pas de chez moi. J'y passe une heure ou deux, le temps d'explorer tous les recoins des expos sélectionnées avec soin, toujours surprenantes, souvent didactiques et ludiques, jamais élitistes (allez, presque jamais). Gros plus: le prix d'entrée ridicule, 1 euro pour les moins de 26 ans, gratuit pour les moins de 19, 6 euros pour les plus de 26.

C'est un endroit calme, agréable, spacieux, où même les noobs de l'art (pour vous servir) se sentiront à l'aise.

There's a place in Ghent that I had a crush on as soon as I set foot here for the first time, and that I visit as much as I can: when I'm hungover on a Sunday afternoon, or whenever I'm bored or seeking inspiration, I spend a few hours at SMAK, the amazing municipal contemporary art museum. I try not to look at my watch and take some time to explore every nook of every exhibition. SMAK exhibitions are always curated with care, surprising and original, often didactic and entertaining and never elitist (ok, almost never). Big plus: the entrance fee is ridiculously low, 1 euro if you're under 26, 6 euros if you're older, free if you're less than 19.

SMAK is a quiet, pleasant, spacious place, where even art noobs (yes, like me) will feel comfortable.

 

En ce moment, deux très belles expositions sont présentées simultanément, j'ai eu la chance de les découvrir dimanche dernier et, chacune à leur façon, elles m'ont captivées:

- Joachim Koester: Maybe One Must Begin With Some Particular Places, une sélection d'oeuvres réalisées par l'artiste durant les vingt dernières années. Une expo mêlant photo, video et installations, dans une impressionnante mise en scène de cabane géante. Vraiment très beau, j'ai adoré y traîner, m'asseoir dans les salles de projection plongées dans le noir et oublier de penser pendant quelques minutes. Jusqu'au 10 mars.

- ENSEMBLEMATIC: une rétrospective dédiée à des artistes qui ont marqué l'histoire du SMAK au fil des années, composée d'oeuvres appartenant à la collection du SMAK ou prêtées par des privés. Une occasion unique de vous confronter aux oeuvres de Wim Delvoye, Jan Fabre, Luc Tuymans ou encore Bruce Nauman, je vous promets que c'est génial! Jusqu'au 2 juin.

 

They are currently showing two very interesting exhibitions, that I discovered last Sunday. Each in their own way, they captivated me:

- Joachim Koester: Maybe One Must Begin With Some Particular Places, a selection of the artist's work from the past 20 years. It mixes photography, video and installations, placed in a very impressive wooden set up. It was really beautiful, I loved hanging out there, sit in the dark screening rooms and let go of reality for a few minutes. It runs until March 10th.

- ENSEMBLEMATIC: a retrospective exhibition dedicated to artists that have made history of the museum, showcasing pieces that belong to the SMAK collection or lent by private collectors. It is a rare occasion to discover the work of artists like Wim Delvoye, Jan Fabre, Luc Tuymans, Bruce Nauman, and so many more! Trust me, it's amazing. Until June 2nd.

Maintenant que je vous ai rencadrés sur de bons endroits pour manger et pour traîner, il est temps que je vous guide un peu niveau shopping à Gand, ma ville d'adoption.

Comme vous le savez, LA ville du shopping en Belgique, c'est plutôt Anvers. Pourtant, Gand regorge de petites boutiques cosy, à la sélection forte et originale, dont celle qui je vais vous présenter aujourd'hui: Au Bon Marché.

Now that I gave you a few good places to eat and hang out in Ghent, let's talk about shopping!

As you might know, Antwerp is usually known as THE city for shopping in Belgium. I'm not gonna say it's not true, but Ghent sure has some pretty cool stores too, with strong identities and edgy selections. One of them was a great discovery I did a couple of weeks ago, it's called Au Bon Marché.

Situé en plein centre, Au Bon Marché est pourtant facilement ratable, car la boutique joue plutôt profil bas; je suis moi-même passée devant un tas de fois sans même remarquer la vitrine! Grave erreur, car en m'y faufilant un jour pour échapper à la pluie, j'ai fait une superbe découverte.

Located in the very center of Ghent, Au Bon Marché is so discrete that you might miss it if you don't know it; that's what happenned to me until I took shelter there on a rainy afternoon. Jackpot, because this store is definitely a must if you're visiting the city.

Derrière l'odeur poudrée de parfum de mamy, vous trouverez en vrac bijoux, maroquinerie, papeterie, gadgets, cartes, accessoires "home"... parfait pour ramener des cadeaux à vos amies, ou pour vous acheter un souvenir. Et bien plus original que Urban Outfitters, non?

Don't judge the grandma perfume smell of the boutique and get it, because you might find your treasure between the jewelry, handbags, hats, stationary, cosmetics, home accessories, etc, etc. It's the perfect place to find a gift for your friends or a souvenir for yourself. And a bit more original than Urban Outfitters if you ask me!

Il y a peu, un nouvel endroit au concept fort intéressant a ouvert à Gand: WASBAR. Le principe (comme son nom l'indique si vous êtes un tout petit peu bilingue) est de combiner la wasserette (laverie automatique) à un bar. Quand j'étais étudiante, je faisais ma lessive dans un lavoir pourrave, je lisais un magazine dans mon coin en patientant, et combien de fois je ne me suis pas dit qu'un truc comme ça devrait exister! Eh bien, comme quoi, tout vient à point à qui sait attendre (sauf que maintenant, alléluia, j'ai une machine à laver chez moi).

Recently, a new place opened in Ghent, with a pretty original and smart concept: WASBAR. The idea is to mix a landromat with a bar, and guess what, it turns out pretty cool! When I was a student, I used to go to this crappy landromat, and I had to hang out there for an hour, reading a magazine or playing with my phone, thinking "why, oh why, do they not open a fun place for laundry"? Well it seems that my prayers have been heard - though I have my own washing machine now!

L'endroit est convivial, même si vous n'avez pas besoin de laver vos petites culottes, super bien équipé, décoré avec goût et humour. Il y a même un coiffeur, ouvert certains jours jusqu'à 22h (faudra que je re-checke les horaires, désolée).

Wasbar is very cosy, even if you actually don't need to do your laundry, they have great equipment and a cool decoration. There's even a hairdresser in the back, open until 10PM on some days (sorry I don't exactly remember when).

J'ai découvert le Wasbar à l'occasion du "Shave off" pour Movember, cette action qui mobilise les gentleman du monde entier autour d'un défi unique: entretenir une belle moustache durant tout le mois de novembre, afin de soutenir la lutte contre le cancer de la prostate. Une cause très masculine, certes, mais que seraient les "Mo bros" sans leurs "Mo sistas", hein? C'est pourquoi j'ai moi aussi rejoint le clan, mon profil est ici et si vous êtes d'humeur généreuse, vous pouvez même faire un don!

I discovered the place when I attended the Movember "Shave off" event last Thursday. Have you heard of it? The concept of Movember is to have all the gentlemen from this world grow a beautiful moustache for the whole month of November. You can support them by giving money and help them fight prostate cancer. A very masculine cause, of course, but hey, what would "Mo bros" be without their "Mo sistas", right? Une des choses que j'aime à Gand, c'est le côté arty et avant-gardiste de ce qui s'y passe culturellement parlant. La ville regorge de créativité, et l'un des berceaux de l'art, c'est la galerie A&Gallery.

One of the things that I love about living in Gent is the arty and edgy vibe of the city. I always feel like everything cultural has this creative and passionate aura, and one of the places that represents this the most is A&Gallery.

Fondé par le photographe Wouter Van Vaerenbergh et par Ben Van Alboom, l'influenceur préféré des jeunes flamands (sérieusement, ce mec est juste une référence absolue dans le nord du pays!) en mai 2011, le lieu a déjà accueilli une floppée d'expos incontournables, publie sa propre "A&Gazette" et fait régulièrement la une grâce à des happenings - comme la reconstitution "in real life" de la pochette de Pink Floyd, en collaboration avec Eastpak, ou encore le concours pour les fêtes de Gand: vous proposiez votre concept et le favori pouvait utiliser A&Gallery durant les 10 jours des fêtes gratuitement, comme il le souhaite! Car c'est là la mission du duo: profiter de leur rayonnement pour offrir de la visibilité aux jeunes talents.

A&Gallery was founded by photographer Wouter Van Vaerenbergh and by Ben Van Alboom, Flanders' favourite influencer (seriously, that guy is a real guru in the north of the country!) in May 2011. And believe me, they've been busy like bees: apart from the great exhibitions they've presented, they publish their own "A&Gazette" and they regularly appear in the news for their creative happenings ideas, like the "Sleep under the stars" event they did with Eastpak, or the contest that they held for Gentse Feesten: you could submit your idea/concept for a pop-up business, and they chose their favourite to occupy the A&G space during the 10 days of the local festivities. And that is precisely what A&Gallery is all about: using their influence to offer visibility to young talents they believe in!

Et justement, en parlant de talent, ce mois-ci la galerie accueille Elisabeth Ouni et son projet A Polaroid Story. L'occasion idéale pour y faire un tour!

Speaking of talent, this month's attraction is Elisabeth Ouni's first exhibition with her project A Polaroid Story, which is the perfect occasion to go check out the place!

J'ai rencontré Elisabeth il y a un peu plus d'un an et je suis son parcours avec intérêt; déjà parce qu'on a pas mal de goûts en communs, mais aussi et surtout parce qu'elle sait passionner ses lecteurs. Sur son blog, elle raconte sa quête du pola parfait de ses idoles hip-hop/r'n'b - pas toujours facile, mais tellement excitant! Elle a su créer autour de son projet un véritable engouement, et le soir du vernissage, nous étions des centaines à nous presser dans l'espace A&G pour la féliciter (ok, et l'admirer).

I met Elisabeth a bit more than a year ago and since then, I follow her with great interest: first, because we have a lot of things in common, second because that girl knows how to capture the attention! On her blog, you can read all about her quest to the perfect "pola" of her hip-hop/r'n'b idols - not always a piece of cake, but so exciting and rewarding! She managed to create a real infatuation around her, the night of the vernissage was the place to be: there were hundreds of people there to congratulate her and admire her work!

 

Quoi qu'il en soit, si vous êtes de passage dans ma belle ville d'adoption, n'oubliez pas de faire un crochet par A&Gallery!
