Trixie Whitley: ce nom vous dit forcément quelque chose ! Disque d'or en une semaine avec son album Fourth Corner, la jeune belgo-américaine donnait récemment une série de concerts en Belgique. J'ai pu assister à la répétition générale, et même si ce n'est pas vraiment mon style, j'ai été bluffée par sa voix et sa présence. Une telle puissance dans un si petit corps, une telle intensité lorsqu'elle est seule sous les projecteurs, ça a de quoi vous donner la chair de poule.

Trixie Whitley: you've probably heard that name before, right ? That girl got a golden record for her album Fourth Corner after only one week ! She recently did a little tour in Belgium, and I got the chance to catch her on her final rehearsal. Even though I have to admit it's not really my cup of tea, oh boy! her voice is simply amazing ! I was seriously impressed to hear her singing with her acoustic guitar, alone in the spotlight: so much power and intensity in such a tiny body definitely can't leave anyone indifferent.

Quelques heures "au vert", ou plutôt à la mer. J'ai pu profiter de cette vue le temps d'une journée de travail dans un appartement sur la digue de La Panne, près de la frontière française. La côte belge a un charme très particulier en hiver: les rues sont vides, la plage est calme, on n'entend que le bruit des vagues et le vent qui souffle.

Worked at sea for a day. For a few hours, I enjoyed this very particular view from an appartment in De Panne, near the French border. The Belgian coast has this very nostalgic, sad charm, especially in winter: the streets are empty, the beach is quiet, all you can hear is the sound of the waves and the wind blowing.

 

Pour la première fois en 25 ans, j'ai été immobilisée par la neige: le blizzard soufflait des centimètres et des centimètres, non-stop, alors évidemment, pas de trains pour aller bosser, et improvisation d'un "home office"... et il n'y a rien à faire, ça a du bon ;)

For the first time in 25 years, I was stuck at home because of the snow ! The blizzard was blowing centimers and centimeters of snow, non stop, so of course there were no trains to go to work and I had to improvise a home office for the day. And I have to say it has its perks ;)

 

Petite escapade à Londres pour aller rendre visite à ma soeur et voir des amis, j'ai quand même fait un crochet par Oxford/Regent/Carnaby Street, et j'ai rapporté cette petite robe bien sympa du H&M qui vient de rouvrir ses portes en grande pompe. Elle ne vous fait pas penser à quelque chose ? J'ai également été voir la boutique & Other Stories, qui m'a très agréablement surprise, et l'expo Juergen Teller, qui m'a un peu déçue.

I also went to London for a few days, to visit my sister and hang out with my English buddies :) Of course I did a little detour by Oxford/Regent/Carnaby Street, and I brought back this awesome dress (doesn't it remind you of something ?) from the big H&M that just re-opened on Oxford. I also payed a visit to the & Other Stories store, which I really liked, and went to see the Juergen Teller exhibition, which disappointed me a bit.

 

Etait-ce le retour du froid, la clim dans l'Eurostar ou encore la fatigue ? Je ne sais pas, mais en tout cas, à mon retour de Londres, j'étais dans un état désastreux. Bilan: consignée 3 jours à la maison avec une méchante toux et de la fièvre à gogo ! Bon, c'est sûr, ce n'est jamais très drôle, mais au moins ça m'aura permis de me familiariser avec un de mes cadeaux d'anniversaire: le Lomo Sprocket Rocket, qui permet de prendre des photos en panorama et de superposer les clichés! J'ai hâte de l'essayer et de vous montrer le résultat, en tout cas les exemples postés par ceux qui maîtrisent déjà la bête font très envie !

Was it because of the cold, because of the airco in the Eurostar of just because I was so tired ? I guess we'll never know why, but when I came back from London, I was super sick. I eventually had to stay home for 3 days, with a very bad cough and fever. Obvisouly those things are never really fun, but at least I eventually got to know better one of my birthday presents: the Lomo Sprocket Rocket ! This analog camera allows you to take panorama pictures and even has multiple exposure, so I really can't wait to try it out and show you the result, because what I've seen from the people who are already mastering the art of Sprocket Rocket looks pretty cool !

 

 

Ca y est, j'ai rattrappé mon sommeil, mon boulot en retard, j'ai trié mes photos et même fait un peu les soldes. C'est donc l'heure du premier post sur mon voyage à Berlin! Premier, parce qu'il y a beaucoup, beaucoup à dire et à montrer: expos, sorties, restaurants, visites, shopping... J'ai donc décidé de structurer un peu, en commençant par le commencement: l'organisation du voyage!

Parce qu'un voyage réussi, ça s'improvise un peu mais pas trop. La bonne idée, déjà, c'était AirBnB: après quelques semaines de recherche, nous avons finalement trouvé un super appartement deux chambres dans un des seuls quartiers de Berlin où l'on trouve encore de vieux immeubles. Planchers, hauts plafonds, le charme de l'avant-guerre en plein Kreuzberg, parce que c'était bien évidemment notre quartier de prédilection.

Okay, now I had tons of sleep, caught up on my work, sorted my pictures and even scored a few items on sale. I'm back for good! So, here comes the first post about my trip to Berlin. First, because I have so much to tell you, and so much to show: party, restaurants, visits, shopping... as I said before, it was a very intense trip, so I decided I would do things like a boss and give it a bit of structure. Starting today, with the organization of the trip!

Because I hate making plans for everything, but a good trip can never be completely improvised. For this time, we had the great idea to try AirBnB, and it was a huge success! After seeking for the perfect place for a few weeks, we finally found a charming 2 bedroom apartment, in one of the only streets of Berlin that weren't destroyed during or after the war. With all wooden floors and high ceilings, an ideal location in Kreuzberg, it seemed like the perfect place for our stay.

Le gros avantage d'AirBnB, c'est bien évidemment le prix: ça nous est revenu à moins de 600 euros pour la semaine, pour 4 personnes. Quand on voit le prix des hotels, même les plus raisonnables, le choix est vite fait. Ce que j'aime aussi dans ce genre d'expérience, c'est d'avoir un "chez soi", où l'on peut se faire à manger, regarder un film, faire la grasse matinée, rentrer aux petites heures... bref, une indépendance qui rend un citytrip beaucoup plus confortable, en tout cas à mon goût.

The biggest advantage with AirBnB is obviously the price: we had to pay just a bit less than 600 euros for one week, with 4 people. Compared to the price of a hotel, even the cheapest ones, it's a pretty easy choice! What I also like about this kind of experience is the fact that you actually have some kind of home: you can cook, watch a movie, sleep in, come back from partying when the sun comes up... you have the kind of independence that I personally miss when staying at a hotel or hostel, and it makes the stay a lot cosier.

Cerise sur le gâteau, nos hôtes avaient beaucoup de goût et l'appartement était décoré à peu près comme les nôtres, du coup on s'est très vite senti chez nous.

Cherry on the cake, our hosts had really good taste in decoration, and the apartment had a lot of similarities with ours, which made it feel instantly like home.

Une expérience que je recommande donc chaudement!

Ensuite, il y a le voyage à proprement parler. On voulait le faire en avion, parce que c'est le plus rapide et le moins cher. Le hic: entre Noël et Nouvel An, les prix pour un aller simple n'ont plus rien à envier aux billets pour New-York. Hors de question de dépenser presque mille euros, on a donc acheté des pneus-neige (obligatoires en Allemagne en automne et hiver!) et on se l'est fait façon road trip. Au final, c'était moins long que la première fois, car on n'a pas du tout eu d'embouteillages et que mon homme conduisait pied au plancher (vive la non-limitation sur les Autobahn): en 7 heures environ, de porte à porte - break au Burger King inclus - nous sommes passés du Noël en famille dans notre petite Belgique au déballage des sacs dans l'appartement berlinois.

Then, there's the travel itself: we were planning on taking the plane, because it's the fastest and cheapest solution, until we realized that rule wasn't applicable between Christmas and New Year's. A one-way ticket was the same price as a ticket to New York, so that was definitely not gonna happen. Eventually we decided to just get snow tires (they're mandatory in Germany during fall and winter!) and do it road trip-style. It wasn't as long as the first time I did it, because we had no traffic at all, and my boyfriend was driving like Schumacher (thanks to the non-existing speed limit on Autobahn). It took us about 7 hours from door to door, including a quick stop at Burger King, to go from family holiday in Belgium to unpacking at our Berlin place.

A refaire, je ne sais pas, ça dépendrait des prix des billets d'avion. Même si une fois sur place, il s'avère très pratique d'avoir une voiture, car la ville (en tout cas à cette période) est relativement pratiquable!

I don't know what we'll do next time, it will probably depend on the plane ticket prices I guess! Though I must say it was a real advantage to have a car in Berlin, because the city is surprisingly car-friendly, at least during that time of the year.

Pour cette compilation, mes deux chouchous de Modeselektor ont été chercher du côté des meilleurs artistes de leur entourage (Addison Groove, Bambounou, Phon.o, Martyn...) des tracks exclusifs. Parfois légèrement expérimental, cet album est plutôt destiné aux initiés de musique électronique.

This one was compiled by Modeselektor and features tracks by their favourite artists (Addison Groove, Bambounou, Phon.o, Martyn and many more). It might sound a little bit experimental, so I would recommend it more to the electronic music insiders.

Le premier album du très jeune et très talentueux Bambounou, sur 50 Weapons. Pas hyper abordable si ce n'est pas votre truc, mais je vous jure que c'est un petit chef d'oeuvre!

This is the very first album of the young and talented Bambounou, on 50 Weapons. Not very approachable if you're not into that kind of music, but I swear this is a little masterpiece.

Major crush on the brand By Zoé at Project Distribution's Press Days. I love that the clothes are feminine but in a very casual way, they always have some great details, perfect cuts and comfy fabrics.

Du coup, c'était le moment idéal pour sortir mes Palladium Waterproof. Eh ben je ne sais pas ce que je ferais sans elles, c'est les pompes parfaites pour braver le froid et l'humidité (et les flaques de neige)!

Well anyway, I guess it was the perfect occasion to wear my Waterproof Palladium shoes. I really don't know what I would do without them, they're actually the perfect shoe to survive to this cold and wet weather!

 

Je suis passée jeter un oeil à la collection printemps-été de New Look et depuis, même si j'ai un peu de mal à me projeter, là, je compte les jours avant l'arrivée des beaux jours. Il y en a pour tous les styles et c'est franchement une des saisons les plus réussies pour la marque!

I passed by New Look's SS2013 presentation and oh my! I gotta say even if I really can't picture myself wearing those light, short clothes right now, I'm counting down the days to spring. In my opinion, it's one of their best collections yet, there's great stuff for all styles and they manage to keep the prices low, which is really important for me.

 

J'ai fait du lobbying à mon boulot et réussi à obtenir un sapin de Noël! Houraaa!!

I did some lobbying at work and managed to get a Christmas tree for the office! Hurrayyy!

 

Samedi dernier, j'ai assisté à The Blog Works, une journée dédiée aux blogueuses entre ateliers, rencontres et intervenants de luxe, avec entre autres l'adorable Susie "Bubble" Lau.

Last Saturday, I attended The Blog Works, a day for bloggers to meet and learn thanks to photo workshops and amazing speakers, such as the adorable Susie "Bubble" Lau.

J'ai enchaîné direct sur les MIA's, une soirée de remise de prix pour les musiciens flamands. L'attraction du jour: des auto-tamponneuses, en mode régressif jusqu'aux petites heures!

Then I directly headed to the MIA's, an award ceremony for flemish musicians. The attraction of the day: bumper cars by Vedett, back to childhood for a few hours!

 

Puis, lundi, j'ai reçu mes premiers cadeaux de Noël, de la part de S.Oliver et IKEA. Hip hip hip pour les adorables nanas de chez Oona! ♥

Then, on Monday, I received my first Christmas presents by S.Oliver and IKEA! Kudos to the girls from Oona, you rock! ♥

Le ghettoblaster, ou boombox, cet objet culte qui permettait aux jeunes des années 80 de se retrouver dans la rue pour s'exprimer à travers la musique (non, rien à voir avec les bandes de kailleras qui écoutent Chris Brown sur leur téléphone dans le métro). Mais juste un POIL trop encombrant.

The ghettoblaster, or boombox, is this cult device that young people used to carry around in the eighties to express themselves on their music in the streets (nothing to do with the riffraff in the subway listening to Chris Brown on their phones, totally different thing, ok?). The only problem with that vintage object? A TINY bit too big.

 

Aujourd'hui, en 2012, un digne héritier est enfin arrivé: X-Mini. Ce truc a changé ma vie. Si vous ne connaissez pas encore, ruez-vous dessus, c'est juste l'avenir! Ce mini-baffle au maxi-son se connecte à votre ordinateur, votre iPhone, votre mp3 en à peu près 1/4 de seconde. Le volume est assez impressionant, mais vous pouvez en connecter plusieurs les uns aux autres pour augmenter le son, si vous devez (par exemple) sonoriser un défilé. Et ça coûte 30 euros/pièce, assez dingue si vous connaissez un peu le prix de ce genre d'appreil. Depuis que je l'ai, je le trimballe en permanence dans mon sac et il a déjà sauvé pas mal de drinks improvisés! Je pense à me choper la version Bluetooth...

Je suis réellement surprise par le volume et surtout la qualité du son qui s'en échappe (coucou les basses!), c'est un peu LE cadeau parfait pour Noël (ou comment offrir la même chose à tout le monde)!

But now we're talking! X-Mini: that little thing changed my life! If you don't know about it yet, there is no time to lose. It's a tiny-speaker with a maxi-sound that you can connect to your computer, your iPhone, your mp3... in about a second. It's pretty loud, and you can connect them in a row to increase the volume if you need to, say, host a fashion show. The craziest part is that this version costs about 30 euros, which is really cheap if you know what speakers usually cost. Since I got it, I always keep it in my bag, just in case, and I already saved a bunch of improvised parties! I might even get the Bluetooth version...

I am really on my ass everytime I realize how loud it is, but also how good the quality of the sound is (yes, there is BASS!), I call the best X-mas gift idea of the year!
