Aha! Le voilà, le billet tant attendu: mes bonnes adresses pour manger à Berlin. Je dois dire que ce séjour a définitivement fini de casser mes préjugés sur les allemands et la gastronomie: je n'ai jamais aussi bien mangé à l'étranger! Que ce soit sur le pouce ou bien posé, ou qu'il s'agisse de cuisiner soi-même des produits de qualité, Berlin regorge de bonnes adresses. Ma bonne intuition, ça a été de m'adresser à des personnes habitant ou ayant habité à Berlin et de leur demander leurs endroits préférés.

Malheureusement, on dirait bien que j'avais mal choisi ma période, car entre Noël et le Nouvel An, beaucoup d'établissements prennent un congé bien mérité. J'ai tout de même pu en tester une flopée, que voici:

Aha! There it is, the one that you've all been waiting for: the Berlin foodpost! I must say that being in Berlin for a week really changed my preconceptions about Germany and food: I've never been eating so well in a foreign country. Whether it was a quick bite, a fancy dinner or even products from the supermarket that we were cooking ourselves, I realized how much Berlin cares about great food. My good idea was to ask people I know that are or have been living there what their favourite places were.

Unfortunately, I guess I was in town during the most quiet possible week of the year, because it seems like between Christmas and New Year's, a lot of places take a well-deserved break. Still, I managed to try out a few places that I can recommend to you, here they are:

 

Découvert grâce au couple d'amis avec qui nous sommes partis et situé juste à côté du Görlitzer Park, Gipfeltreffen est l'endroit parfait pour venir bruncher avant d'aller voir l'East Side Gallery ou pour manger un bout de gâteau lors d'une pause-shopping dans Kreuzberg. Ambiance déco vintage et tout fait maison, pour moi c'est le signal d'un thé à la menthe fraîche et d'une assiette fromage-charcuterie!

This one, I discovered through the couple of friends that we were staying with, when we were walking around Kreuzberg: located near the Görlitzer Park, Gipfeltreffen is the perfect place to brunch before visiting the East Side Gallery, or to have a cake break after seeing the neighborhood like I advised you to the other day. Vintage , cosy decoration, homemade everything... I just had to order some fresh mint tea and a plate of cheese and delicatessen!

Niveau restau maintenant, il y a en deux types dont Berlin abonde: les italiens et les hamburgers. Les seconds tenant visiblement plus à leur break de fin d'année, nous n'avons pas pu nous y frotter cette fois. Par contre, on s'est bien rattrappés sur les italiens!

Now about restaurants. There are two types of restaurants that you will see everywhere in Berlin: italian and hamburger places. Since those were apparently really commited to their holiday break, we had to concentrate our efforts on the italians for this time.

 

Le premier qu'on a testé, sur les conseils de mon pote Mike qui a vécu à Berlin, s'appelait Il Casolare. En mode gueule de bois, après une après-midi de shopping, on a réservé une table dans ce restau typique: les serveurs crient, les tables sont serrées et on vous sert votre vin dans un verre à eau. Avant de vous demander où vous êtes tombés et de quitter votre table, commandez une pizza... et savourez. Une des meilleures que j'aie jamais mangé, et apparemment tout le monde s'accorde pour dire que c'est la meilleure de Berlin.

A la carte, vous ne verrez d'ailleurs que des pizzas, les pâtes, viandes et poissons changent tous les jours et ne sont pas vraiment la spécialité ici.

Petit conseil d'ami: ré-ser-vez! A mon avis, ça relève de l'impossible d'avoir une table sans appeler au préalable. Et arrivez à l'heure, car votre temps à table est compté!

The first one that we went to, following my pal Mike's advice, was Il Casolare. We booked a table there on a hangover day, tired after an afternoon shopping and walking, hungry as hell. This place couldn't be more typical: the waiters are yelling through the whole room, the tables are too close to each other, wine is served in a water glass... but please, before wondering what the hell you're doing there, order a pizza, it will give you the answer. Honestly, it was one of the best I had ever had in my entire life, and apparently, everyone in Berlin agrees to say it's the best pizza in town.

That's probably why on the menu, you will only be able to find pizzas: the meat, fish and pasta are not really the specialty. They have some, written on a chalk board, it changes everyday and I don't really recommend going for that anyway.

Also: book a table! Call in the afternoon, I don't even think you can get a table if you just show up. And if you managed to book a table, arrive on time, because you only have a limited amount of time to enjoy your meal before the next client arrives. Still: best. pizza. ever!

Changement d'ambiance: Fratelli La Bionda

Celui-là, nous l'avons découvert complètement par hasard, en voulant réserver dans un autre restaurant du même propriétaire; il n'y avait plus de place, alors il nous a indiqué cet endroit, qui en plus était situé à 5 minutes de chez nous. Comparé au premier, cet italien-ci est calme, chic, les serveurs sont aux petits soins, et un DJ choisit soigneusement les morceaux qui accompagnent votre dîner. Ici aussi, seules les pizzas figurent à la carte, le reste est proposé chaque jour sur un tableau noir. Mais moi, j'ai repris de la pizza ^^!

Encore une fois délicieuse, je ne saurais trop dire laquelle des deux était la meilleure, c'est vraiment l'ambiance qui diffère et personnellement, j'aime l'idée d'alterner les deux.

Another italian, another style: Fratelli La Bionda.

We actually ended up eating there by accident: we wanted to check another restaurant, but it was fully booked, so the owner told us he had another place and that we should eat there, which we did. It was the complete opposite of the first one we tried: quiet, polite waiters, big table, fancy setup, and a DJ was selecting the best of his house tracks to make us enjoy our time there. The only thing in common was the food, which was as delicious! Once again, only pizzas are on the menu, but they have other fancy dishes of the day to offer. But yeah, I had pizza again ^^!

I really couldn't say which food was better, I think you should do both places if you have the chance, because they're both very cool, in very different ways.

Berlin, c'est aussi une ville où l'immigration turque se ressent très fort, ce qui n'est pas pour me déplaire, surtout quand ça veut dire qu'un simple kebab se transforme en vrai plaisir gustatif! Pour ça, j'ai suivi encore une fois le conseil de Mike et foncé chez Doyum Grillhaus, dans Kreuzberg. A première vue, c'est un snack un peu pourri avec des mecs qui ne parlent pas anglais, et franchement je ne crois pas qu'on y entre par hasard. A l'intérieur, c'est effectivement un (très grand) snack, mais c'est quand vous vous tournez vers les "cuisines" que la magie opère: entre le pain qui dore doucement et la viande qui grille sous vos yeux, votre estomac commence doucement à vous supplier de rester. On n'a pas mangé sur place, et donc pas vraiment goûté les plats, en revanche on s'est peté le bide avec des Döner Kebab et Spezi à emporter! Parfait pour les jours de feignasse, encore mieux si vous avez un peu d'alcool à éponger.

Berlin is also a city with a huge turkish population, which is pretty cool because that also means turkish food, which I love! That's how a simple kebab suddenly turns into a masterpiece, and to experience that I once again followed Mike's advice and went to Doyum Grillhaus, in Kreuzberg. At first sight, it might seem like just another crappy snack with dudes who don't speak english, and honestly I think most people inside knew where they were going and why! It is, indeed, a very big snack, but when you see the "kitchen" and see the meat slowly cooking, the bread toasting, that's when you start realizing you're about to make your stomach very happy. We didn't eat at a table there, so we couldn't really taste the actual dishes, but man, the Döner Kebab and Spezi we took back home were delish! It's perfect for those days when you really don't feel like cooking or eating at a restaurant, also even better if you had a bit too much the night before.

De manière générale, le plus frappant, c'est que manger à Berlin, ça ne coûte pas grand chose. D'ailleurs, c'est simple: finalement, nous n'avons vraiment cuisiné qu'une fois, le reste du temps on mangeait à l'extérieur.Pour une table de quatre, l'addition tournait toujours entre 80 et 100 euros, vin et dessert compris (bah oui on s'est fait plaisir du coup)!

The most amazing thing about all this, is that eating in Berlin doesn't really cost much. We ended up cooking only once, because eating outside is that cheap. For a table of four, we were always between 80 and 100, (lots o')wine and dessert included (if it's that cheap, make the most of it, right)!

 

Pour le petit dej' et les produits de base, on se fournissait chez BioCompany, un supermarché Bio avec des produits vraiment très bons et pas très chers. Nous avions aussi la chance d'avoir, tout près de chez nous, la Marheineke Markthalle, un marché couvert où l'on trouve viande, légumes, fromage, pain, spécialités italiennes et allemandes, le tout frais, de qualité, pour un prix comparable à ceux pratiqués en supermarché.

For breakfast and basic products, we were getting most of our supplies at BioCompany, a bio supermarket with good products at a very reasonable price. We also found out we had the most amazing kind of supermarket just round the corner: Marheineke Markthalle, an indoor market with fresh meat, bread, vegetables, italian and german specialties... great quality and taste, unbelievable prices.

Au final, je n'ai que deux grands regrets: ne pas avoir eu la chance de manger un hamburger ou un steak chez The Bird, et ne pas avoir goûté aux fameux Mustafa's Gemuse Kebab (quand TOUT LE MONDE ne jure que par un kebab, c'est qu'il doit quand même être vachement bon, non?).

Il y a évidemment un tas d'autres endroits que l'on m'a recommandé pour bruncher, dîner, se goinfrer, et comme je ne les ai pas tous testé mais qu'ils m'ont tous été recommandés par des gens de confiance, je suis gentille, je les ai mis sur ma liste Foursquare consacrée à Berlin. De rien ;)

I only have two big regrets: I wish I had had the opportunity to have a burger or a steak at The Bird, and been brave enough to wait in line for 30 minutes for what I heard was the best kebab ever at Mustafa's Gemuse Kebab (if everyone is getting so excited about a kebab, it has to be amazing right?).

Of course, there a lot of other places to have brunch, dinner, bites, cake, that I still didn't check out, but since they were all recommended by people that I trust, I am sharing them with you on this Foursquare "To Do in Berlin" list. Isn't that very nice? I believe it is ;)

 

Il y a beaucoup, BEAUCOUP de choses à faire à Berlin. Si la ville est surtout connue pour son agitation nocture, vous avez aussi énormément d'options pour la découvrir à la lumière du jour. Difficile, voire impossible de tout faire évidemment... pour cette fois, on a essayé de définir tout ce qu'on voulait absolument voir, et au final c'était parfait!

There are many, MANY things to do in Berlin. And even though the city is mostly known for its crazy nightlife, there is actually a lot to do during the day too. So much that it's very hard, even impossible to see everything at once. This time, we decided to focus on the things we really wanted to see, and it was a perfect balance!

 

- Se promener dans Kreuzberg: à plusieurs reprises, nous avons eu l'occasion de marcher dans le quartier où nous dormions, Kreuzberg, réputé pour ses habitants jeunes et sa créativité bouillonnante. Ce qui est chouette, c'est qu'effectivement, à chaque coin de rue, il y a un magasin de meubles vintage, de vêtements pour enfants, de streetwear, un café, un snack, une librairie, un disquaire, un vidéoclub (je vous JURE!)... rien que pour s'imprégner de l'ambiance, je vous conseille donc de réserver un ou deux après-midis pour découvrir les abords du Görlitzer Park, East Side Gallery (l'énorme partie de mur transformée en galerie d'art en plein air), mais aussi le quartier plus reculé et près de Südstern, où nous logions. Si vous avez le temps, attardez-vous également dans le centre et découvrez Potsdamer Platz avec son "Walk Of Fame" version allemande, passez par le Mémorial aux Juifs assassinés d'Europe et allez jusqu'à la Porte de Brandenburg.

- Walk around Kreuzberg: since we were staying in that neighborhood, we had several occasions to walk around this area, famous for its creative vibe and its young population. What I really like is that there is a cool shop/place at every corner: vintage furniture, kids clothes, streetwear, cafés, snacks, books, music, video rental (I KNOW RIGHT!)... I really recommend to keep one or two afternoon to go explore and feel the vibe around Görlitzer Park, East Side Gallery (the remains of the Wall that were transformed into an open air gallery) and the neighborhood near Südstern. If you have more time, go to the center and discover Potsdamer Platz with the german "Walk of Fame", visit the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and walk to the Brandenburg Gate.

 

- Faire du shopping dans Mitte, sur la Hackescher Markt (MUJI!), la Neue Schönhauserstraße et aux alentours (Weekday, Cos, Urban Outfitters, Fred Perry...). Pour les plus courageuses, il y a la Friederichstraße, où vous trouverez les Zara, H&M, Galeries Lafayette, etc, ainsi que la boutique Gina Tricot.

- Do some shopping in Mitte, on Hackescher Markt (MUJI!), the Neue Schönhauserstraße et aux alentours (Weekday, Cos, Urban Outfitters, Fred Perry...). You can also check out Friedrichstraße, where you can find the not-so-exotic Zara, H&M, Galeries Lafayette, etc, and Gina Tricot.

 

- Passer quelques heures au Musée Juif. J'aurais pu y rester la journée s'il y avait eu moins de monde, tellement il y a de choses à lire et à apprendre. Le musée retrace l'histoire des juifs en Allemagne, avant, pendant et après la seconde guerre mondiale, et est un vrai plaisir de faire un bond dans le passé à travers les divers objets présentés sur place. Le musée vaut également la peine de s'y arrêter pour son architecture, très impressionnante et touchante.

- Spend a few hours at the Jewish Museum. I found it so interesting and abundant that I could have stayed a whole day if it was less crowded. The museum tells the history of Jewish people in Germany before, during and after the world war II, with the help of a lot of old personal effects that were collected through the centuries. The museum is also worth a visit for its architecture, very impressive and moving.

- Découvrir l'histoire et l'évolution du cinéma allemand au Museum für Film und Fernesehen: les premières caméras, les premiers studios, l'exode hollywoodien... et encore une fois, le musée lui-même, avec les jeux de miroirs, de découpes dans les murs et cages d'escaliers, vaut la peine d'y mettre les pieds.

- Discover the history and the evolution of german cinema at the Museum für Film und Fernesehen: the first video cameras, the first studios, the migration to Hollywoo... once again, even the museum itself and its setup are worth paying a visit.

While I was in Berlin, I also did a bit of shopping. You know, sales had already started there so I figured, what the hell! I'll tell you more about shopping in Berlin very soon, but before, let me show you one of the great advantages of being less than 1m65: T-shirt in size L = dress!

Mini-jambes #ftw!

Si je devais changer une chose à mon corps, ce serait probablement la taille de mes jambes. Grand complexe de ma vie, j'ai toujours du mal à regarder une photo de moi en pied, parce que je trouve toujours que j'ai l'air tassée et j'ai envie de me pendre par les pieds à une poutre avec un poids à chaque bras jusqu'à gagner ne fût-ce qu'un ou deux centimètres et avoir l'air plus ou moins proportionnée. Je ne sais pas combien d'entre vous ça touche, mais pour celles qui ne connaissent pas ça, sachez qu'avoir des petites jambes est bien souvent un réel handicap. Le moindre achat de jean devient un vrai chemin de croix avec ourlets approximatifs en haut de la colline, et surtout il faut faire super gaffe dès qu'on veut porter des shoes qui montent au-dessus de la cheville ou des jupes qui descendent sous le genou, sous peine d'avoir une dégaine de naine. Alors pour une fois que ça sert...on ne va pas s'en priver. Maigre consolation, on est bien d'accord... mais consolation quand même!

 

Tiny legs #ftw!

If I had to change one thing about me, that would probably be the size of my legs. They're my big life complex, so much that I actually have a hard time looking at a head-to-toe shot of me, because I always think I look crammed and want to hang myself on a beam by the feet and carry extra-weights with my hands until I gain one or two centimeters and look proportionate. I don't know how many of you have the same problem, but for those of you who don't know it, well, now you know: it can be a real handicap. Buying jeans is a road to hell paved with approximate hemstitches, and wearing anything above the ankle or under the knee is self-sabotage, because it makes you look even shorter - and fatter. So yeah, for once, small legs are an advantage, I'm not gonna deprive myself! It might be a small consolation, but it's still a consolation.

Ca y est, j'ai rattrappé mon sommeil, mon boulot en retard, j'ai trié mes photos et même fait un peu les soldes. C'est donc l'heure du premier post sur mon voyage à Berlin! Premier, parce qu'il y a beaucoup, beaucoup à dire et à montrer: expos, sorties, restaurants, visites, shopping... J'ai donc décidé de structurer un peu, en commençant par le commencement: l'organisation du voyage!

Parce qu'un voyage réussi, ça s'improvise un peu mais pas trop. La bonne idée, déjà, c'était AirBnB: après quelques semaines de recherche, nous avons finalement trouvé un super appartement deux chambres dans un des seuls quartiers de Berlin où l'on trouve encore de vieux immeubles. Planchers, hauts plafonds, le charme de l'avant-guerre en plein Kreuzberg, parce que c'était bien évidemment notre quartier de prédilection.

Okay, now I had tons of sleep, caught up on my work, sorted my pictures and even scored a few items on sale. I'm back for good! So, here comes the first post about my trip to Berlin. First, because I have so much to tell you, and so much to show: party, restaurants, visits, shopping... as I said before, it was a very intense trip, so I decided I would do things like a boss and give it a bit of structure. Starting today, with the organization of the trip!

Because I hate making plans for everything, but a good trip can never be completely improvised. For this time, we had the great idea to try AirBnB, and it was a huge success! After seeking for the perfect place for a few weeks, we finally found a charming 2 bedroom apartment, in one of the only streets of Berlin that weren't destroyed during or after the war. With all wooden floors and high ceilings, an ideal location in Kreuzberg, it seemed like the perfect place for our stay.

Le gros avantage d'AirBnB, c'est bien évidemment le prix: ça nous est revenu à moins de 600 euros pour la semaine, pour 4 personnes. Quand on voit le prix des hotels, même les plus raisonnables, le choix est vite fait. Ce que j'aime aussi dans ce genre d'expérience, c'est d'avoir un "chez soi", où l'on peut se faire à manger, regarder un film, faire la grasse matinée, rentrer aux petites heures... bref, une indépendance qui rend un citytrip beaucoup plus confortable, en tout cas à mon goût.

The biggest advantage with AirBnB is obviously the price: we had to pay just a bit less than 600 euros for one week, with 4 people. Compared to the price of a hotel, even the cheapest ones, it's a pretty easy choice! What I also like about this kind of experience is the fact that you actually have some kind of home: you can cook, watch a movie, sleep in, come back from partying when the sun comes up... you have the kind of independence that I personally miss when staying at a hotel or hostel, and it makes the stay a lot cosier.

Cerise sur le gâteau, nos hôtes avaient beaucoup de goût et l'appartement était décoré à peu près comme les nôtres, du coup on s'est très vite senti chez nous.

Cherry on the cake, our hosts had really good taste in decoration, and the apartment had a lot of similarities with ours, which made it feel instantly like home.

Une expérience que je recommande donc chaudement!

Ensuite, il y a le voyage à proprement parler. On voulait le faire en avion, parce que c'est le plus rapide et le moins cher. Le hic: entre Noël et Nouvel An, les prix pour un aller simple n'ont plus rien à envier aux billets pour New-York. Hors de question de dépenser presque mille euros, on a donc acheté des pneus-neige (obligatoires en Allemagne en automne et hiver!) et on se l'est fait façon road trip. Au final, c'était moins long que la première fois, car on n'a pas du tout eu d'embouteillages et que mon homme conduisait pied au plancher (vive la non-limitation sur les Autobahn): en 7 heures environ, de porte à porte - break au Burger King inclus - nous sommes passés du Noël en famille dans notre petite Belgique au déballage des sacs dans l'appartement berlinois.

Then, there's the travel itself: we were planning on taking the plane, because it's the fastest and cheapest solution, until we realized that rule wasn't applicable between Christmas and New Year's. A one-way ticket was the same price as a ticket to New York, so that was definitely not gonna happen. Eventually we decided to just get snow tires (they're mandatory in Germany during fall and winter!) and do it road trip-style. It wasn't as long as the first time I did it, because we had no traffic at all, and my boyfriend was driving like Schumacher (thanks to the non-existing speed limit on Autobahn). It took us about 7 hours from door to door, including a quick stop at Burger King, to go from family holiday in Belgium to unpacking at our Berlin place.

A refaire, je ne sais pas, ça dépendrait des prix des billets d'avion. Même si une fois sur place, il s'avère très pratique d'avoir une voiture, car la ville (en tout cas à cette période) est relativement pratiquable!

I don't know what we'll do next time, it will probably depend on the plane ticket prices I guess! Though I must say it was a real advantage to have a car in Berlin, because the city is surprisingly car-friendly, at least during that time of the year.

C'est le 3e volume de cette compilation éditée par le label berlinois (tiens tiens), et la recette continue de fonctionner. A réserver pour votre arrivée dans la ville: poussez les basses et savourez!

This is already the 3d volume of the compilation issued by the Berlin-based (of course!) label, and yet it keeps getting better. Keep that one for that special time when you arrive in the city: turn up the bass and enjoy!

This one was compiled by Modeselektor and features tracks by their favourite artists (Addison Groove, Bambounou, Phon.o, Martyn and many more). It might sound a little bit experimental, so I would recommend it more to the electronic music insiders.

Autre Fabriclive, autre style: cette fois, c'est DJ Oneman qui nous ballade entre UK Funky et dance, avec un côté rétro-90's et surtout cette patte typiquement anglaise qui caractérise si bien cette figure de la radio Rinse FM.

This is the very first album of the young and talented Bambounou, on 50 Weapons. Not very approachable if you're not into that kind of music, but I swear this is a little masterpiece.

Dès la frontière passée, j'ai été rattrappée par ma passion pour ce mets introuvable en Belgique appelé Double Whopper. Hmmmm, burger.

As soon as we had crossed the border, I had to get my hands on that delicious thing they call Double Whopper and that we don't have in Belgium. Hmmm, burger.

 

Une fois sur place, j'ai goûté une des meilleures pizzas de ma vie. Je vous en reparle dans un post dédié à la gastronomie berlinoise!

I had some more sophisticated food in Berlin, including one of the best pizzas I've ever had. I'll tell you more about that soon in a blogpost dedicated to eating in Berlin!

J'ai fêté le Nouvel An dans une masse incroyable de feux d'artifice! Sérieusement, je n'en avais jamais vu ni entendu autant, apparemment c'est une grande tradition berlinoise, et personnellement j'ai adoré, même si je me suis fait de belles frayeurs! / photo @cpizzutilo
